Q16695 is a testis-specific H3 variant expressed in testicular cells, whereas P68431 corresponds to the canonical replication-dependent Histone H3.1, which is ubiquitously expressed. Both localize to the nucleus and chromosome.

Histone H3 is extensively modified on its N-terminal tail, including acetylation, methylation, phosphorylation, citrullination, and many other marks.
