Biological Background: Glycophorin A Function and Localization
- Glycophorin A (GYPA), also known as MN sialoglycoprotein, PAS-2, or CD235a, is the major intrinsic membrane protein of human erythrocytes and a key determinant of the MNS blood group system.
- It is a component of the ankyrin-1 complex, contributing to erythrocyte membrane stability and shape, and is required for the high activity and plasma membrane translocation of the anion exchanger SLC4A1 (band 3).

- As a single-pass transmembrane protein, glycophorin A localizes to the cell membrane, with its glycosylated N-terminus exposed extracellularly.
