Biological Background: ATF6 Function and Localization
- ATF6, also known as ATF6-alpha, is a cyclic AMP-dependent transcription factor that acts as a precursor embedded in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) membrane. Upon ER stress, it is proteolytically processed to release the active transcription factor form. Related references: PMID:10564271, PMID:11158310, PMID:11779464
- The processed ATF6 translocates to the nucleus and initiates the unfolded protein response (UPR) by activating transcription of UPR target genes. Related references: PMID:10564271, PMID:11158310, PMID:11163209
- ATF6 binds to the ER stress response element (ERSE) with the consensus 5'-CCAC[GA]-3' half-site, requiring NF-Y for full ERSE binding, and also binds to ERSE II. Related references: PMID:10564271, PMID:11158310, PMID:11779464
