Biological Background: Integrin alpha-L Function and Localization
- ITGAL encodes integrin alpha-L (CD11a), a leukocyte-specific adhesion receptor that pairs with integrin beta-2 (ITGB2) to form lymphocyte function-associated antigen 1 (LFA-1).
- LFA-1 binds multiple ligands: ICAM1 (PubMed:10846180), ICAM2 (PubMed:1676048), ICAM3 (PubMed:12526797), ICAM4, F11R (PubMed:11812992; PubMed:15528364), and ISG15 (PubMed:29100055), mediating leukocyte adhesion, transmigration, and immune synapse formation (PubMed:38195629).
