Biological Background: ZCCHC11 Function and Localization
- Terminal uridylyltransferase 4 (TUT4), also known as zinc finger CCHC domain-containing protein 11 (ZCCHC11), PAPD3 or TENT3A, is a nucleotidyltransferase enzyme responsible for adding uridine residues to the 3' ends of RNA substrates.
- Mediates terminal uridylation of mRNAs with short (less than 25 nucleotides) poly(A) tails, thereby promoting global mRNA decay. Related references: PMID:25480299 PMID:31036859
- Plays a dual role in microRNA (miRNA) biology: suppresses miRNA biogenesis by uridylating precursor miRNAs (e.g., pre-let-7) leading to degradation, and also facilitates miRNA-induced gene silencing by uridylating deadenylated miRNA targets; in absence of LIN28A, monouridylates group II pre-miRNAs to enhance Dicer processing.
