Biological Background: YKL-40/CHI3L1 Function and Localization

• YKL-40/CHI3L1 is a secreted glycoprotein also known as chitinase-3-like protein 1, 39 kDa synovial protein, or cartilage glycoprotein 39 (CGP-39).
• It belongs to the glycosyl hydrolase 18 family and functions as a carbohydrate-binding lectin with affinity for chitin but lacks chitinase activity.
• Plays a role in tissue remodeling and cellular responses to environmental changes.
• Involved in T-helper cell type 2 (Th2) inflammatory responses and IL-13-induced inflammation, regulating processes such as allergen sensitization, inflammatory cell apoptosis, dendritic cell accumulation, and M2 macrophage differentiation.
• Facilitates invasion of pathogenic enteric bacteria into colonic mucosa and lymphoid organs, mediating AKT1 signaling and IL8 production in colonic epithelial cells.
