Biological Background: VPS24 Function and Localization

• Charged multivesicular body protein 3 (VPS24), also known as CHMP3, NEDF, and CGI-149, is encoded by the CHMP3 gene in humans. It exists as two isoforms produced by alternative splicing; isoform 2 has been shown to prevent stress-mediated cell death and accumulation of reactive oxygen species.
• VPS24 is a probable core component of the endosomal sorting required for transport complex III (ESCRT-III), which is essential for the formation of multivesicular bodies (MVBs) and the sorting of endosomal cargo proteins into intraluminal vesicles (ILVs). These ILVs are delivered to lysosomes for degradation of membrane proteins, including stimulated growth factor receptors.
