Biological Background: VGLUT2 Function and Localization
- VGLUT2 (Vesicular glutamate transporter 2), encoded by the SLC17A6 gene, is a ~64 kDa multi-transmembrane glycoprotein belonging to the solute carrier 17 family.

- At the synaptic vesicle membrane, VGLUT2 acts as a uniporter that preferentially transports L-glutamate and phosphate into vesicles, driven by the electrical gradient established by the vacuolar H+-ATPase (PubMed:11698620). Related references: PMID:11698620
- The protein also exhibits chloride channel activity, facilitating chloride permeation to aid synaptic vesicle acidification, and functions as a vesicular K+/H+ antiporter to sustain glutamate uptake (By similarity).
