Biological Background: VEGFA Function and Localization

  • VEGFA participates in the induction of key genes involved in the response to hypoxia and in the induction of angiogenesis, such as HIF1A. Related references: PMID:35455969
  • VEGFA is a growth factor active in angiogenesis, vasculogenesis and endothelial cell growth. It induces endothelial cell proliferation, promotes cell migration, inhibits apoptosis and induces permeabilization of blood vessels. Related references: PMID:34530889
  • VEGFA binds to the FLT1/VEGFR1 and KDR/VEGFR2 receptors, as well as NRP1/neuropilin-1. One isoform binds the KDR receptor but does not activate downstream signaling pathways and inhibits tumor growth.
  • The protein localizes to multiple subcellular compartments, including the cytoplasm, nucleus, endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi apparatus, and is secreted into the extracellular space and matrix.
  • VEGFA is a glycoprotein with heparin-binding affinity and contains disulfide bonds, which are essential for its structural integrity and function.
