Biological Background: USP4 Function and Localization
- USP4 (ubiquitin-specific protease 4), also designated UNP or Unph, is a deubiquitinating enzyme that removes ubiquitin from target proteins, participating in diverse cellular processes.
- It deubiquitinates multiple substrates including PDPK1, TRIM21, ADORA2A, HAS2, RHEB, and MAVS, thereby modulating signaling cascades such as mTORC1, receptor trafficking, and innate immunity. - USP4 enhances antiviral innate immune responses by deubiquitinating MAVS, which increases type I interferon production. Related references: PMID:39589880
