Biological Background: USP13 Function and Localization
- USP13, also known as Isopeptidase T-3 (ISOT-3) or Ubiquitin carboxyl-terminal hydrolase 13, is a deubiquitinase that removes ubiquitin from target proteins, regulating processes such as autophagy, ERAD, cell cycle progression, and DNA damage response. - It is a key component of a regulatory loop controlling autophagy by deubiquitinating and stabilizing BECN1 and VPS34, thereby promoting autophagosome formation. Related references: PMID:32101753
- USP13 participates in endoplasmic reticulum-associated degradation (ERAD) by deubiquitinating SKP2 and UBL4A, ensuring proper protein quality control in the ER.
