Biological Background: Tropomyosin alpha-1 chain Function and Localization
- Tropomyosin alpha-1 chain (TPM1) is a coiled-coil protein that binds actin filaments in muscle and non-muscle cells and, in association with the troponin complex, mediates calcium-dependent regulation of vertebrate striated muscle contraction. Related references: PMID:23170982
- In smooth muscle, TPM1 regulates contraction via interaction with caldesmon.
- In non-muscle cells, TPM1 stabilizes the cytoskeletal actin network.
- Subcellular localization is primarily cytoplasmic, associated with the cytoskeleton.
- Tissue specificity: detected in primary breast cancer tissues but not normal breast; isoform 1 is expressed in adult and fetal skeletal and cardiac muscle (higher in cardiac), while isoform 10 is cardiac-specific.
