Biological Background: TRIM38 Function and Localization

• TRIM38 (RNF15, RoRet) is an E3 ubiquitin-protein and E3 SUMO-protein ligase of the tripartite motif family.
• Negatively regulates type I interferon production by mediating 'Lys-48'-linked polyubiquitination and proteasomal degradation of AZI2/NAP1 (by similarity) and TICAM1 (TRIF), thereby inhibiting TLR3-mediated signaling. Related references: PMID:23056470
• Positively regulates the cGAS-STING pathway via sumoylation of CGAS and STING, preventing their degradation and activating innate immunity against DNA viruses (by similarity).
