Biological Background: TFAP2C Function and Localization
- TFAP2C (Transcription factor AP-2 gamma), also known as Activating enhancer-binding protein 2 gamma or ERF-1, is a sequence-specific DNA-binding transcription factor.
- It binds to the consensus sequence 5'-GCCNNNGGC-3' and activates genes involved in a broad range of biological functions, including embryonic development and cancer progression. Related references: PMID:11694877 PMID:24413532
- TFAP2C plays a critical role in early embryonic development by regulating inner cell mass (ICM) and trophectoderm differentiation, as well as controlling cell-polarity genes during morula development.
- In trophoblast commitment, it binds to late trophectoderm genes together with CDX2, and later to extra-embryonic ectoderm genes with SOX2.
