Biological Background: TFAM Function and Localization
- TFAM (Transcription Factor A, Mitochondrial; also known as MtTF1, TCF-6) is a key mitochondrial protein that regulates mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) transcription and maintenance.
- It binds to the mitochondrial light strand promoter and is a component of the mitochondrial transcription initiation complex, together with TFB2M and POLRMT, to enable basal transcription; it also promotes transcription initiation from the HSP1 and light strand promoters by binding immediately upstream of transcriptional start sites. - TFAM recruits POLRMT to specific promoters, facilitating accurate and efficient promoter recognition by the mitochondrial RNA polymerase. Related references: PMID:20410300
