Biological Background: TFAM Function and Localization

  • TFAM (Transcription Factor A, Mitochondrial; also known as MtTF1, TCF-6) is a key mitochondrial protein that regulates mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) transcription and maintenance.
  • It binds to the mitochondrial light strand promoter and is a component of the mitochondrial transcription initiation complex, together with TFB2M and POLRMT, to enable basal transcription; it also promotes transcription initiation from the HSP1 and light strand promoters by binding immediately upstream of transcriptional start sites.
