Biological Background: TEX101 Function and Localization

  • Encoded by the TEX101 gene (also designated SGRG), the protein is alternatively known as cell surface receptor NYD-SP8, scleroderma-associated autoantigen, and spermatogenesis-related gene protein.
  • Functions in fertilization by controlling sperm binding to the zona pellucida and migration into the oviduct (By similarity).
  • May participate in signal transduction and promote protein tyrosine phosphorylation (By similarity).
  • Predominantly expressed in testis and spermatogonia; also detected in blood leukocytes, but not in spermatocytes.
  • Localizes to the cell membrane and membrane rafts; additionally present in cytoplasmic vesicles, secretory vesicles, the acrosome, and can be secreted.
  • Post-translationally modified as a glycoprotein with a GPI anchor; alternative splicing generates multiple isoforms.
