Biological Background: Synaptophysin Function and Localization

• Synaptophysin, also known as major synaptic vesicle protein p38, is encoded by the SYP gene. Multiple isoforms are produced by alternative splicing.
• It plays a key role in organizing membrane components and targeting synaptic vesicles to the plasma membrane, thereby regulating both short-term and long-term synaptic plasticity (By similarity).
• This integral membrane protein is a member of the synaptophysin family and contains four transmembrane helices, contributing to vesicle structure and trafficking.
