Biological Background: STIM1 Function and Localization
- STIM1 (stromal interaction molecule 1) is a 77 kDa transmembrane protein encoded by the human gene STIM1 (Gene ID: 6786). It belongs to the stromal interaction molecule family and is also known by aliases GOK, TAM, and TAM1.
- STIM1 functions as a Ca2+ sensor in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) that gates store-operated Ca2+ entry (SOCE) by activating Ca2+ release-activated Ca2+ (CRAC) channels and arachidonate-regulated Ca2+-selective (ARC) channels at the plasma membrane (PubMed:15866891, PubMed:16005298, PubMed:16208375).
