Biological Background: Steroidogenic factor-1 Function and Localization
- Steroidogenic factor-1 (SF-1/NR5A1) is a transcriptional activator essential for sexual differentiation and the formation of primary steroidogenic tissues, including the adrenal cortex and gonads. Related references: PMID:27378692
- It binds to the Ad4 site in the promoter regions of key steroidogenic P450 genes such as CYP11A, CYP11B, and CYP21B, as well as regulating AMH, AHCH, and STAR genes.
- SF-1 is a member of the nuclear receptor subfamily 5 group A (NR5A), also known as adrenal 4-binding protein (AD4BP) or steroid hormone receptor Ad4BP.
- Localized predominantly in the nucleus, SF-1 functions as a DNA-binding transcription factor.
- Post-translational modifications include phosphorylation by HIPK3, which enhances steroidogenic gene expression upon cAMP pathway stimulation.
