- ST8SIA2 (alpha-2,8-sialyltransferase 8B, also known as SIAT8-B, STX, ST8SiaII) catalyzes the transfer of sialic acid residues via α-2,8-linkages onto terminal sialic acids of N-linked glycans, playing a central role in polysialic acid (PSA) synthesis on substrates such as NCAM1, FETUB, and AHSG (PubMed:10766765, PubMed:11744634, PubMed:9054414, PubMed:7559389). - The enzyme lacks sialic acid-polymerase activity, indicating a specialized role in the initiation or elongation of PSA chains rather than de novo synthesis (By similarity).
