Biological Background: SPHK1 Function and Localization

  • SPHK1 (sphingosine kinase 1), also known as SK1 and acetyltransferase SPHK1, is a multifunctional enzyme encoded by the SPHK1 gene (Gene ID: 8877) in humans. It belongs to the sphingosine kinase family and plays key roles in sphingolipid metabolism and signaling.
  • Catalyzes the phosphorylation of sphingosine to form sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P), a bioactive lipid mediator with intracellular and extracellular functions.
