Biological Background: Snail Function and Localization

  • SNAI1, also known as protein snail homolog 1, is a zinc finger transcriptional repressor belonging to the Snail family.
  • SNAI1 is critically involved in inducing the epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT), a process essential for embryonic mesoderm formation, growth arrest, cell survival, and migration. Related references: PMID:10655587, PMID:15647282, PMID:20389281
  • As a transcriptional repressor, SNAI1 binds to E-boxes in the E-cadherin (CDH1) promoter and recruits the histone demethylase KDM1A, leading to decreased dimethylated H3K4 levels and transcriptional silencing of target genes such as CDH1, CLDN7, and KRT8.
