- Diablo IAP-binding mitochondrial protein, also known as Second mitochondria-derived activator of caspases (SMAC), is encoded by the DIABLO gene and plays a central role in apoptotic signaling.
- It promotes apoptosis by neutralizing inhibitor of apoptosis proteins (IAPs) such as XIAP/BIRC4 and BIRC6/BRUCE, thereby enabling caspase-9 and caspase-3 activation.
