  • SLC4A8 encodes the electroneutral sodium bicarbonate exchanger 1, also known as electroneutral Na(+)-driven Cl-HCO3 exchanger or k-NBC3. It mediates electroneutral sodium- and carbonate-dependent chloride-bicarbonate exchange with a Na+:HCO3- stoichiometry of 2:1. Related references: PMID:18577713
  • The protein plays a major role in pH regulation in neurons, contributing to acid-base homeostasis in the central nervous system.
  • It is involved in sodium reabsorption in the renal cortical collecting ducts, supporting electrolyte balance.
  • SLC4A8 is a multi-pass transmembrane protein localized to various cellular compartments, including apical and basolateral cell membranes, cytoplasmic vesicles, secretory vesicles, and synaptic vesicle membranes.
