Biological Background: SLC40A1 (Ferroportin) Function and Localization
- Also known as ferroportin-1, iron-regulated transporter 1, and solute carrier family 40 member 1 (SLC40A1), this protein is the sole known mammalian iron efflux transporter.
- Transports Fe(2+) across the plasma membrane from the cytosol to the extracellular space, essential for dietary iron absorption in enterocytes, iron recycling from macrophages, and iron mobilization from hepatocytes.
