Biological Background: SLC35A1 Function and Localization
- SLC35A1 encodes a CMP-sialic acid transporter (solute carrier family 35 member A1) belonging to the nucleotide sugar transporter family SLC35.
- The protein localizes to the Golgi apparatus membrane, where it functions as an antiporter exchanging cytosolic CMP-sialic acid for luminal CMP, and can also exchange CMP-sialic acid for AMP or UMP. Related references: PMID:12682060 PMID:15576474 PMID:23873973
- The transporter shows higher binding affinity for free CMP than for CMP-sialic acid and also mediates CDP-ribitol transport (By similarity).
- Mutations in SLC35A1 are associated with congenital disorder of glycosylation type IIf (CDG2F), a condition characterized by defective protein glycosylation.
- The gene undergoes alternative splicing, potentially producing multiple protein isoforms (UniProtKB keyword).
