Biological Background: SLC25A23 Function and Localization

  • SLC25A23, also known as mitochondrial adenyl nucleotide antiporter SLC25A23 or SCaMC-3, is a member of the solute carrier family 25 and functions as an electroneutral antiporter in the inner mitochondrial membrane.
  • It mediates the transport of adenine nucleotides, originally identified as an ATP-magnesium/inorganic phosphate antiporter but also acting as a broad specificity adenyl nucleotide antiporter, thereby regulating the mitochondrial matrix adenine nucleotide pool to adapt to changing cellular energetic demands.   • SLC25A23 also serves as a regulator of mitochondrial calcium uptake and can transport trace amounts of other divalent metal cations in complex with ATP. Related references: PMID:24430870, PMID:28695448
  • In vitro, a low activity is observed with guanyl and pyrimidine nucleotides. Related references: PMID:15123600
  • The protein is localized to the mitochondrial inner membrane.
