Biological Background: SLC25A14 Function and Localization
- Brain mitochondrial carrier protein 1 (BMCP1), also known as UCP5, is encoded by the SLC25A14 gene.
- It functions as a mitochondrial transporter of inorganic anions (sulfate, sulfite, thiosulfate, phosphate) and, to a lesser extent, dicarboxylates, aspartate, glutamate, and tricarboxylates, and may modulate hydrogen sulfide levels by exporting its degradation products.
