- SLC1A4 (ASCT-1) is a sodium-coupled neutral amino acid antiporter that exchanges substrates such as L- and D-serine, L-threonine, L-asparagine, and L-alanine across the plasma membrane (PubMed:14502423, PubMed:26041762, PubMed:27272177). - It plays a critical role in D-serine homeostasis at excitatory synapses, mediating electrogenic D-serine influx in astrocytes coupled to L-serine efflux, which supports neuronal de novo D-serine synthesis (By similarity).
