  • SLC1A4 encodes the neutral amino acid transporter A (ASCT1), also known as alanine/serine/cysteine/threonine transporter 1, a member of the solute carrier family 1.

  • Plays a critical role in D-serine homeostasis in astrocytes at excitatory synapses, mediating electrogenic D-serine influx coupled to L-serine efflux and supporting de novo D-serine synthesis in neurons.
