Biological Background: SLC16A7 (MCT2) Function and Localization
- SLC16A7 (MCT2) is a proton-coupled monocarboxylate symporter that mediates the rapid plasma membrane transport of key energy substrates, including L-lactate, pyruvate, and ketone bodies (acetoacetate, beta-hydroxybutyrate, and acetate). - The protein is localized at the cell membrane, specifically the basolateral membrane in polarized cells, and is also found in the cytoplasm.
- Tissue expression is highest in testis; moderate to low levels are detected in spleen, heart, kidney, pancreas, skeletal muscle, brain, and leukocytes. While expression is restricted in normal tissues, MCT2 is widely up-regulated in cancer cells. Related references: PMID:15505343 PMID:9786900
