Biological Background: SHBG Function and Localization

• SHBG, also known as sex steroid-binding protein (SBP), testosterone-estradiol-binding globulin (TeBG), and androgen-binding protein (ABP), is encoded by the SHBG gene (GeneID: 6462). Alternatively spliced isoforms 1 and 2 are expressed in liver and testis.
• Functions as an androgen transport protein, specifically binding 5-alpha-dihydrotestosterone, testosterone, and 17-beta-estradiol with high affinity, thereby regulating the plasma metabolic clearance rates of steroid hormones.
• May also participate in receptor-mediated processes, with each dimer binding one molecule of steroid.
