- It is necessary for the ATP-dependent first step of spliceosome assembly by binding to the intron branch point sequence (BPS) 5'-UACUAAC-3' of the pre-mRNA.
- SF1 may also act as a transcription repressor, linking splicing to transcription regulation.
- The protein contains a zinc-finger domain, consistent with its classification as a zinc-finger protein and its metal-binding properties.
- Subcellularly, SF1 is localized to the nucleus, where splicing and transcription occur.
- SF1 is widely expressed, detected in tissues including lung, ovary, adrenal gland, colon, kidney, muscle, pancreas, thyroid, placenta, brain, liver, and heart.
