Biological Background: Septin 2 Function and Localization

• Septin-2, also known as NEDD-5, is encoded by the SEPTIN2 gene. It belongs to the septin family of GTP-binding proteins, and alternative splicing generates multiple isoforms.
• It is a filament-forming cytoskeletal GTPase that assembles into higher-order structures, playing critical roles in cytoskeletal organization and cell division.
• During mitosis, Septin-2 forms a scaffold at the midplane of the mitotic spindle, which is required for maintaining CENPE localization at kinetochores and enabling chromosome congression and segregation.
