Biological Background: SCD5 Function and Localization

• Stearoyl-CoA desaturase 5 (SCD5), also known as ACOD4, HSCD5, SCD2, or SCD4, is an enzyme involved in lipid metabolism.
• Catalyzes the introduction of a cis double bond at the delta-9 position into saturated fatty acyl-CoAs such as palmitoyl-CoA and stearoyl-CoA, using O₂ and cytochrome b5. Related references: PMID:15610069, PMID:15907797, PMID:22745828
• Localizes to the endoplasmic reticulum membrane, consistent with its role in fatty acid desaturation.
