Biological Background: SAMHD1 Function and Localization
- SAMHD1 (SAM domain and HD domain-containing protein 1) is also known as DCIP, CHBL2, HDDC1, MOP-5, SBBI88, and hSAMHD1. It is a deoxynucleoside triphosphate triphosphohydrolase with key roles in antiviral restriction and DNA repair.
- SAMHD1 functions as a host restriction factor by depleting cellular dNTP pools via its dNTPase activity, thereby blocking reverse transcription of retroviruses such as HIV-1 in dendritic and myeloid cells (PubMed:19525956, PubMed:21613998, PubMed:21720370).
