Biological Background: RPL13A Function and Localization
- RPL13A encodes the large ribosomal subunit protein uL13 (also known as 60S ribosomal protein L13a or 23 kDa highly basic protein), a component of the 60S ribosomal subunit.
- While associated with ribosomes, uL13 is not required for canonical ribosome function and has extra-ribosomal roles, including participation in transcript-selective translation regulation. Related references: PMID:14567916, PMID:17218275, PMID:23636399
- Upon interferon-gamma stimulation, uL13 is phosphorylated and dissociates from ribosomes to assemble into the GAIT (gamma-interferon-activated inhibitor of translation) complex. This complex binds to stem-loop GAIT elements in the 3'-UTR of inflammatory mRNAs (e.g., ceruloplasmin) and suppresses their translation by blocking 43S ribosomal complex recruitment via interaction with eIF4G.
