• RNF40 encodes the E3 ubiquitin-protein ligase BRE1B, also known as 95 kDa retinoblastoma-associated protein (RBP95) and RING finger protein 40. It is a member of the RING-type E3 ubiquitin transferase family, characterized by a RING finger domain that mediates zinc binding and ubiquitin ligase activity.
• BRE1B forms a functional complex with RNF20 to catalyze monoubiquitination of histone H2B at lysine 120 (H2BK120ub1).
