Biological Background: RAB21 Function and Localization

  • Ras-related protein Rab-21 (RAB21) is a member of the Rab family of small GTPases, which function as key regulators of intracellular membrane trafficking, including vesicle formation, movement, tethering, and fusion.   • During mitosis of adherent cells, RAB21 controls the endosomal trafficking of integrins, a process essential for the successful completion of cytokinesis. Related references: PMID:18804435
  • RAB21 regulates integrin internalization and recycling, thereby influencing cell adhesion and migration, without affecting the general traffic of endosomally translocated receptors.
