- RAB17, also known as Ras-related protein Rab-17, belongs to the Rab family of small GTPases that regulate intracellular membrane trafficking from vesicle formation to fusion.
- It is specifically involved in transcytosis, directing the movement of endocytosed material through epithelial cells and its exocytosis from the opposite plasma membrane, likely via apical recycling endosomes (By similarity).
- RAB17 is required for melanosome transport and release from melanocytes, and regulates dendrite and dendritic spine development (By similarity).

- Subcellularly, RAB17 localizes to recycling endosome membranes, melanosomes, and cell projections such as dendrites.
- It is expressed in melanocytes at the protein level.
