- RAB13 specializes in endocytic recycling and directs plasma membrane delivery of transmembrane proteins such as occludin (OCLN), thereby governing tight junction assembly and function.
- Beyond occludin transport, RAB13 activates PKA signaling and reorganizes the actin cytoskeleton through effectors PRKACA and MICALL2, respectively, to further modulate tight junction dynamics; it also contributes to the establishment of the Sertoli cell barrier.
- Angiogenesis (via endothelial chemotaxis), neurite outgrowth, and post-Golgi trafficking from the trans-Golgi network to recycling endosomes represent additional RAB13-dependent processes.
- Insulin-stimulated translocation of the glucose transporter GLUT4 to the plasma membrane involves RAB13, implicating it in glucose homeostasis.
- Subcellularly, RAB13 localizes to the cell membrane, cytoplasmic vesicle membranes, tight junctions, Golgi apparatus, trans-Golgi network, recycling endosomes, and lamellipodia.
