Biological Background: PTBP1 Function and Localization
- PTBP1, also known as heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein I (hnRNP I), is a 57–60 kDa RNA-binding protein that plays essential roles in pre-mRNA splicing and the regulation of alternative splicing events.
- It binds to polypyrimidine tracts of introns and may promote RNA looping when bound to two separate polypyrimidine tracts in the same pre-mRNA, facilitating U2 snRNP recruitment to the pre-mRNA.
- PTBP1 represses the splicing of MAPT/Tau exon 10 (PubMed:15009664).
