- The 20S proteasome can associate with 19S regulatory particles to form the 26S proteasome, mediating ATP-dependent degradation of ubiquitinated proteins, crucial for protein homeostasis.
- PSMB5 specifically displays chymotrypsin-like activity within the 20S core complex.
- The 20S proteasome also mediates ubiquitin-independent degradation when associated with PA200 or PA28, involved in spermatogenesis and MHC class I antigen processing.
- The protein localizes to both the cytoplasm and nucleus.
