- PSMA2 (Proteasome subunit alpha type-2) encodes a core alpha subunit of the 20S proteasome, also known as macropain subunit C3, multicatalytic endopeptidase complex subunit C3, and proteasome component C3.
- As a component of the 20S core proteasome, it participates in the proteolytic degradation of most intracellular proteins, maintaining protein homeostasis by removing misfolded or damaged proteins and those no longer needed.
- The 20S proteasome associates with 19S regulatory particles to form the 26S proteasome, which degrades ubiquitinated proteins in an ATP-dependent manner; it also associates with PA200 or PA28 for ubiquitin-independent degradation in pathways such as spermatogenesis and MHC class I antigen presentation.
- PSMA2 is localized in both the cytoplasm and nucleus.
- Post-translational modifications include acetylation and phosphorylation, as identified by proteomics.
