- Prothrombin (coagulation factor II) is the zymogen precursor of thrombin, a serine protease that plays a central role in blood coagulation, hemostasis, and wound healing.
- Thrombin cleaves peptide bonds after arginine and lysine residues, converting soluble fibrinogen into insoluble fibrin to form blood clots.
