Biological Background: PLA2G7 Function and Localization
- PLA2G7 encodes platelet-activating factor acetylhydrolase (PAF-AH), also known as Lp-PLA2 or group-VIIA phospholipase A2. It is a secreted lipoprotein-associated calcium-independent enzyme that plays a key role in phospholipid catabolism during inflammatory and oxidative stress responses (PubMed:10066756, PubMed:16371369, PubMed:17090529). - It specifically hydrolyzes short-chain fatty acyl groups at the sn-2 position of phospholipids, including the inactivation of platelet-activating factor (PAF) (PubMed:10504265, PubMed:2040620, PubMed:11590221). It also cleaves oxidized phospholipids with long fatty acyl chains carrying aldehyde groups, preventing their accumulation in LDL (PubMed:2040620, PubMed:7700381).
