Biological Background: PGP9.5/UCHL1 Function and Localization

• Ubiquitin carboxyl-terminal hydrolase isozyme L1 (UCHL1), also known as neuron cytoplasmic protein 9.5 (PGP9.5), is a multifunctional deubiquitinase and thiol protease that hydrolyzes C-terminal glycine adducts of ubiquitin, maintaining the free monoubiquitin pool essential for ubiquitin-proteasome and autophagy-lysosome degradation systems.
