Biological Background: PGAM5 Function and Localization

  • PGAM5 is a serine/threonine-protein phosphatase primarily located in mitochondria, existing as multiple isoforms from alternative splicing. It is also known as BXLBV68 and belongs to the phosphoglycerate mutase family.
  • It resides on both the outer and inner mitochondrial membranes, a unique dual topology critical for its diverse functions.
  • PGAM5 regulates mitochondrial fission by dephosphorylating DNM1L/DRP1, thereby modulating cellular senescence. Related references: PMID:32439975
