Biological Background: PEX5 Function and Localization

• PEX5, also known as peroxisomal targeting signal 1 receptor (PTS1 receptor), PTS1-BP, or peroxin-5, is a key component of the peroxisomal protein import machinery, existing in multiple isoforms via alternative splicing.
• Mediates peroxisomal import of proteins containing a C-terminal PTS1-type tripeptide peroxisomal targeting signal (SKL-type) by binding to cargo proteins in the cytosol and translocating them through the PEX13-PEX14 docking complex into the peroxisome matrix.
