Biological Background: Peroxiredoxin 6 Function and Localization
- Peroxiredoxin-6 (PRDX6) is a 25 kDa multifunctional enzyme belonging to the peroxiredoxin family, also known as 1-Cys peroxiredoxin, antioxidant protein 2 (AOP2), and non-selenium glutathione peroxidase (NSGPx). Its gene symbol is PRDX6.
- Catalyzes the reduction of hydrogen peroxide and organic hydroperoxides (including short chain, fatty acid, and phospholipid hydroperoxides) to water and alcohols, playing a crucial role in cellular defense against oxidative stress. Related references: PMID:10893423, PMID:9497358
- Exhibits calcium-independent phospholipase A2 (aiPLA2) activity, hydrolyzing the sn-2 ester bond of phospholipids; this activity is pH-dependent and contributes to phospholipid homeostasis. Related references: PMID:10893423, PMID:26830860
